Cindy Neighbor, District 18

Biography

Rep. Cindy Neighbor was first elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2002.  She represents the 18th House District, which covers northern Johnson County, including portions of Lake Quivira and Shawnee.

Cindy currently resides in Shawnee with her husband of 36 years, Jim. They have lived in Shawnee for over three decades and have four grown children: Kim, Samantha, Justin, and Jamie, Jr.  Cindy attended Johnson County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College. She currently works as a Patient Care Coordinator, Human Resource Officer, and Public Relations and Marketing Director for a local dentist's office.

Public service has always been a top priority for Cindy. Within the Johnson County community, she has served on the original committee that opened the Ronald McDonald House at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She has also been active with United Community Services, an organization which provides the opportunity to work on child abuse issues such as the "Happy Bear" initiative. Additionally, Cindy has worked as a marketing volunteer for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and is also involved with the Wyandotte and Johnson County Junior League.  She also served as a volunteer with the Shawnee Fire Department Rescue Squad.

In the area of school advocacy, Cindy has been involved in several capacities.  She served as PTA President, as an officer in the Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA, as an elected official to the Shawnee Mission Advisory Board (13 years), as an executive officer of the Kansas Association of School Boards, and currently serves on the Shawnee Mission School Board.  This experience has been one of Cindy's most valuable assets as a state representative as she has worked to ensure public schools receive the funding they need to prepare Kansas children for the demands of a global economy.

As a state representative, Cindy serves on the House Committees on Energy and Utilities, Health and Human Services, and Insurance and Financial Institutions.  She was appointed by Governor Sebelius to serve on the Board of Indigent Defense Services, and has also served on the Kansas State Board of Education's Teacher Credentialing Board.
