Committees
Standing Committees
Standing Committees are established every two years by the Speaker of the House. They consider proposed legislation and make recommendations to the full House body. Members are typically selected to standing committees based on their background, interest, or experience (ie, a lifelong teacher would likely serve on the Education Committee). The majority party chairs all standing committees, while the minority party selects a Ranking Democrat and other members based on the number of individuals in the minority caucus. They meet at a regular time and place during the legislative session.

Budget Committees
The 23-member Appropriations Committee is the force behind the final budget bill that is presented to the full House body for consideration each year. However, six smaller budget committees are in place to review appropriations within specific areas of the budget. Each member of the Appropriations Committee must also serve on one budget committee, although the remaining members of the budget committees do not necessarily have to be a member of the full Appropriations Committee. This enables more members to be involved with the budget process, specifically in areas in which they might have particular expertise. Each budget committee will work specifically with agencies that fall under their jurisdiction and will make budget recommendations to the full Appropriations Committee.
