Don Svaty, District 108
Biography
Don Svaty, Ellsworth, was officially sworn into office to represent the 108th House District in the summer of 2009. He was appointed to replace his son, Joshua Svaty, who resigned the post to serve as Secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture. With a lifelong background in agriculture and community involvement, Don was able to continue the superb representation that the 108th District received from his son without missing a beat.
Don is a lifelong Kansan and has been married to his wife, Niki, for 33 years. They have four grown children and four grandchildren. He graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. He also served in the Kansas National Guard for six years (1965-71) while teaching social sciences at Ellsworth/Kanopolis High School (1968-74). Don left teaching to oversee the family farm operation, Svaty Brothers, which has grown into a diversified agricultural production of wheat, corn, soybean, milo and sunflower crops. He also runs a cow/calf herd.
Within the community, Don serves as an Elder and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. He is also a member of the Christian Education Committee and the Ellsworth County Farmer’s Cooperative. He was a 14-year member of the U.S.D. 327 School Board, including one term as president. Additionally, Don has been actively involved in the Elkhorn 4-H Chapter, especially as his children ventured through the program.
The 108th House District includes Ellsworth County, most of Saline County, including southwestern Salina and Solomon in Dickinson County.
