Executive Branch

The Executive Branch is headed by the Kansas governor. The governor is elected every four years in a statewide election. The governor serves as Kansas’ head elected official. He or she may serve no more than two terms and is joined in the Executive Office by a Lieutenant Governor, who serves as second in command and assumes the governor’s responsibilities should the position become vacant.

Similarly to the federal government, Kansas’ executive branch is responsible for enforcing laws via state agencies. In addition to the governor and lieutenant governor, the executive branch is comprised of the Governor’s Cabinet and other state departments. The Governor appoints the heads of all Cabinet agencies and oversees all other state departments, though agencies not in the Cabinet select their own directors.
