Legislative Branch
The Kansas Legislature consists of a 125-member House of Representatives and a 40-member Senate. Members of the House are elected for two-year terms and senators are elected for four-year terms. All districts, both House and Senate, are divided by population. House members represent approximately 21,000 individuals, while Senators represent approximately 84,000 individuals.
The legislative branch is responsible for making Kansas laws. The Legislature convenes annually for a general session which usually last 90 calendar days. Throughout these three months, the Legislature meets daily at the State Capitol to approve the annual budget, meet with committees, and consider other proposals and bills. In order for a bill to go to the Governor for signature or veto, it must be approved by both chambers.
