Tom Burroughs, District 33

Biography

Rep. Tom Burroughs was first elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1997.  He serves the 36th House District, which covers portions of south central Wyandotte County, including Kansas City and Lake Quivira.

In 2007, Tom was instrumental in the passage of legislation to expand gaming in Kansas.  The Kansas Expanded Lottery Act, an initiative spearheaded by Tom for several years, authorized slot machines at race tracks and four state-owned destination casinos.  This legislation will provide an additional $201,708,000 in revenue to Wyandotte County.

During the 2008 term, Tom has maintained a near-perfect final action voting record stretching back to the 1999 legislative session.  In nine years, he has missed only one final action vote.

Tom currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee.  He is also a member of the House Committee on Insurance and Financial Institution and the General Government Budget Committee, as well as the Joint Legislative Post Audit Committee.  Tom is also chair of the Wyandotte County delegation.

Tom and his wife, Cathie, reside in Kansas City and have three children.  He worked for nearly 30 years for Colgate-Palmolive Company and retired in 2006.
