The following statement is attributed to House Minority Leader Tom Burroughs regarding the passage of House Substitute for SB 7:
“I’m gravely disappointed with the outcome of today’s debate. An entire generation of Kansas students is being thrown under the bus for the sake of the Governor’s failed experiment.
“This legislation creates inequalities in schools across the state by pitting poor districts against wealthy districts and urban districts against rural districts. It also caps funding and forces public schools to absorb more cuts at a time when we should be investing funding in education.
“Today the House also decided to ignore a critical rule that ensures fiscal responsibility, which is further evidence that it is only a priority to some members of the legislature when it is politically convenient. As such, there is no guarantee schools will even be funded at their current levels because we still face a $600 million deficit that has been brought on by the Governor’s flawed tax plan.”
