Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka:

“I’m appalled that Governor Brownback resorted to backdoor arm twisting to get his tax plan through the Senate this morning.

“The plan we’re left with is a five-year, $3.7 billion plan that will shift the tax burden onto middle-class families and seniors living on fixed incomes at the detriment of public education and property tax relief.

“By allowing our governor to use his political power to override the Senate’s first vote, the Kansas Senate flip-flopped and failed the people of Kansas. We should be ashamed of ourselves.”

House Democratic Leader Paul Davis, D-Lawrence:

"The Brownback/Senate tax plan is reckless and fiscally irresponsible. We can’t afford to begin restoring the hundreds of millions in cuts we’ve made to public schools if we’re bleeding $800 million a year in revenue for tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the wealthy. This puts us on a collision course with either devastating budget deficits or even more crippling budget cuts."
